Year Five

Welcome back to the Summer term of year five! I am very excited for our last term together with our wonderful year five class.  I know that they will continue to be hardworking and show all of our Fullerton standards as they have done throughout the year.

The children are continuing to impress me with their love of reading with lots of them reading and sharing recommended reads, I cannot wait to share new books and continue with them on their reading journey.  It was lovely to see the children talking about the books they were reading and asking for more!!  Reading is key to all we do and incredibly important across the whole of our curriculum, so your support is vital in helping your child develop the confidence and love of reading to reach their full potential.   We do expect the children to read at home at least three times a week and have this signed weekly in their reading diaries.   I will check and sign this every Friday.

This term we will be carrying out lots of mini topics.  Our main ones are below:

In literacy the children will learn about pollution and read and work on books in relation to this.  Our key book for this topic is, “The last wild” by Piers Torday.  After the half term the children will read and do work around, “Radiant Child, The Story of Young Artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat.” In addition to this text the children will develop their reading skills further through reading the book, “AFRICAN TALES: A Barefoot Collection,  By Gcina Mhlophe & Rachel Griffi.”

In our art lessons the children will be carrying out a painting project all about Wassily Kandinsky.  The children will learn key facts about this artist and the style as well as producing their own piece of work in his style.

In history the children will learn all about Ancient Maya.  They will understand that by comparison with British society in Saxon times the Maya were in many ways more advanced. Finally, it allows pupils to compare this with ancient Egypt studied in year four.

In science we will cover Properties and Changes of Materials.  They will learn about mixtures and how they can be separated using sieving, filtration and evaporation. They study reversible and irreversible changes, and use common indicators to identify irreversible changes.

In PE the children will start off with basketball, fitness and netball.  After half term this will swap to athletics and rounders. Our PE day for this term is Friday. The children will need a full PE kit for both days-plain white T shirt, black bottoms and a red, grey or black hoodie or jumper.

 Homework:

 Homework will be given weekly. The children will be asked to complete:

 *    15 minutes of their reading books at least 3x per week (dairies will be checked and signed every Friday.)

 *    Subject specific homework given on a Friday (due in the following Friday)

*     Spellings to learn weekly.

 *    Reflex times tables - please play on this at least three times a week to keep your times tables knowledge fresh and efficient.

 I will post all messages and announcements on dojo so that you can be well informed on what is happening in school.

 If you have any questions about any of this information or other questions not relating to this please do not hesitate to contact me.

 Many thanks.

 Mrs Lowry
